Chanel is one of today’s best known and most highly sought-after fashion brands, and has been one practically since it was founded by Coco (Gabrielle) Chanel in 1909. Simply put, Coco Chanel is a fashion icon; her creations are the stuff of legend. Coco secured a place in the history of fashion with a steadfast commitment to creating quality clothing for women that was both stylish and comfortable. "A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous," Coco Chanel once said.
She worked to break the mold of the old French tradition of dress, allowing women to move in their clothing while maintaining a sophisticated silhouette. Unwavering in her determination to bring quality products to her clients, she insisted that her pieces be hand-stitched. Although her clothes were comfortable Chanel would never forfeit style. Maintaining classic lines, taking inspiration from menswear, and utilizing a timeless palette of black and white, Chanel secured her place in history.
The Chanel product brands have been personified by fashion models and actresses, including Inès de la Fressange, Catherine Deneuve, Carole Bouquet, Vanessa Paradis, Nicole Kidman, Anna Mouglalis, Lucía Hiriart, Hope Portocarrero, Audrey Tautou, Keira Knightley and Marilyn Monroe.
Today, Chanel stands out in just about every category: couture, ready-to-wear, accessories, jewelry, shoes and fragrances.
Gabrielle Chanel was not only a great fashion designer but also an incredible reader. For Gabrielle Chanel, if she has a very carnal relation to the fashion and the way in which she can liberate the body of the woman has also enormously conceptualized her art, her way of sewing and imagining a garment, relying on multiple inspirations, pictorial and literary.
Friend of the greatest authors and poets of her time, Chanel fed on their flashes and their writings. "Coco Honey, I just saw Dali and we talked about you dearly. I wish you luck, which is ridiculous, because you are lucky ": here is for example a quote from a letter from Cocteau which she was so close to. This curious, cultured, complex woman was an incredible reader, of Shakespeare, Plato, Dostoevsky, Flaubert, or Maupassant, but also of ancient literature like Homer, Virgil, or Lucretius.
Her library was exhibited for the first time in Venice; a wonderful way to discover another aspect of her personality.
