Of all the great Parisian couture houses, Dior is one the most famous and prestigious in the world, embodying Christian Dior’s sublime vision of femininity. The Italian couturier Gianfranco Ferré, was artistic director of the house of Dior from 1989 to 1996. At the dawn of 1990s, Gianfranco Ferré provided a glamorous, daring touch, enhanced by sumptuous materials, rich colours and voluptuous, exuberant silhouettes, for a femininity that was both sophisticated and contemporary - and powerful too, highlighting the growing power of women in society. The successor to Yves Saint Laurent and the duo of Marc Bohan and Frédéric Castet created a new archetype: the woman of the moment, and not with a specific customer in mind. From his first haute couture collection presented in 1989 in the garden of the Salomon de Rotschild Hotel, and until 1996, Gianfranco Ferré continued to draw on the history and codes of Dior, to which he added a modern twist. He even revived a tradition inherited by Dior’s founding couturier, by naming each of his designs.

The twin of this wide-brim hat was presented on the 1990 runway, Gianfranco’s second couture collection for Christian Dior. It's made of natural straw which has been masterfully handwoven. A fashion treasure.

Christian Dior
Christian Dior werd geboren op 21 januari 1905 was een Franse modeontwerper en tevens de oprichter van een van ’s werelds grootste modehuizen: Christian Dior (nu eigendom van LVMH).
Het Huis van Christian Dior startte in 1947, toen de Normandië geboren ontwerper Christian Dior zijn eigen bedrijf opende. Zijn label veranderde de middeleeuwse mode-look van die tijd. Dat kwam in het bijzonder door zijn "New Look" vlak na de Tweede Wereld Oorlog welke Dior de status gaf van één van de meest beroemde Franse ontwerpers in de geschiedenis.
De New Look (de term is bedacht door de toen Editor-in-Chief van Harper’s Bazaar, Carmel Snow) omvatte wulpse silhouetten met bustier lijfjes en A-lijn rokken welke de vormen van iedere vrouw flatteerde. Het zette de wereld in vuur en vlam en is nog steeds in de hedendaagse mode terug te vinden.
Het huis bleef succesvol, zelfs na de dood van Dior in 1957, toen Yves Saint Laurent het roer overnam en daarna in handen kwam van Marc Bohan en Gianfranco Ferrè. John Galliano maakte in 1996 zijn debuut met zijn eerste collectie op de 50ste verjaardag van het label en bleef bij Dior voor een indrukwekkende ambtstermijn. Hij introduceerde de "Anything Goes"-look door een extreme make-over van het label. Daags voor de najaarscollectie van 2011 werd Galliano op basis van beschuldigingen van antisemitisch commentaar ontslagen bij Dior. Bill Gaytten, Galliano’s rechterhand, nam zijn taak over. In april 2012 werd Raf Simons Creative Director van Dior, momenteel ontwerpt hij de vrouwen prêt-à-porter en haute couture collecties.
Christian Dior ontwierp een tijd lang ook collecties sierraden, deze vintage sierraden zijn zeer populair.
